Windows stores all of its settings and data in the windows registry, this is a central database which is used by all windows applications to store the settings. The windows registry is huge and has hundreds of different settings which can affect your hardware, software and even the operating system itself.
When you install new applications or hardware to your computer, windows will automatically create windows registry keys to tell the computer how to run with these new pieces of kit. This means nest time you turn your computer on, or run an application your computer will search the registry to find out how to do certain tasks.
Because all of the settings are stored in the registry it is much easier for people to keep a track of what is being changed. When you change the wallpaper on your desktop a key in the registry is changed in the folder HKEY_USER. This means that when you boot your computer up again it will display the same background.
Registry Problems
However there are many registry problems which can occur for a number of reasons, the windows registry is similar to any other file on your computer which means that it's possible to become corrupt or damaged. The registry can also become bloated fairly easily, which results in your system slowing down.
This is why so many people would benefit from using a System file repair utility such as Regcure, which can be downloaded from here. This system file checker will automatically scan your registry for invalid keys and remove them.
The most common cause of registry problems is when you uninstall applications but it is not done properly or correctly. The windows uninstall process is by no means perfect and often leaves traces of the programs on your computer, particularly in the windows registry. This can cause problems, not only in the size of your registry, but can also create conflicts.
Guide to fixing system file problems
Some people may suggest that you should open up the windows registry using the regedit utility and play around with it. This isn't really a good idea unless you are qualified to do so. For most people this will cause a lot more damage than good. If you try fixing registry problems manually then this could result in more complicated problems.
The easiest way is to use Regcure, which we've already looked at. This will help you to scan your computer for errors and remove them if required. It's so simple, and very low risk. Although this is low risk you should also make sure that you back up the windows registry just incase anything bad happens.
Another way of speeding your system up is to tweak it slightly, using the hidden windows system configuration utility which can be found by going to Start -> Run, and then typing in “msconfig” can be a great way to do just this. You can quickly and easily disable start up programs and processes for example, just be careful what you are doing!
