Computers aren't really the most reliable things which we use everyday, you might just get to trust your computer only to learn that it starts locking up, which is also known as hanging or freezing. It might also crash (reboot itself) or shut down whenever it wants to. If you have experienced a computer freeze yourself then you might want to try these simple steps to find out what is causing the problem.
Inspect any software or hardware that you installed recently
Sometimes the lockups will occur just after installing a new piece of software or hardware, this almost certainly means that it's the new hardware or software causing the problem. Try removing the hardware or uninstalling the software and see if this resolves the problem.
Why does my Computer freeze? Sometimes lockups or unstable computers are caused by a virus on your computer, you should start by updating your antivirus program and then running a thorough system scan. It's absolutely vital that you update your virus scanner as if you use an out of date virus scanner it's not going to be any good. If you don't have any antivirus software then make sure that you get some, there are plenty of different pieces of antivirus software out there such as Micro Antivirus which can be downloaded by clicking here. You can find lots of different antivirus providers on the Internet.
If your computer has viruses then it's very likely that your computer also has adware or spyware on it. You should start by finding some good spyware removal tool like XoftSpySE. Download this by clicking here, then make sure that it's fully updated and then run a scan.
Check how much hard drive space is available
If you don't have any viruses then check how much free space your have on your main hard drive. You need to have over 20% of the space available, otherwise this can cause your computer to freeze randomly.
Overheating
If your computer overheats then this can be another cause of your computer freezing. This could be caused by fans failing inside your case, or simply dust building up and restricting air flow. If you feel comfortable doing so then take your computer apart to check that the motherboard and power supply are free of dust. You can also use monitor software to check the temperature of the components in your case. If you are cleaning your computer then you need to be very careful and never open the case to the PSU.
Hard disk
Sometimes the hard drive could also be causing the error, start by checking your hard disk for errors by going to my computer, right clicking C Drive and then selecting “Tools”, and then check all of the “Check Disk Options” check boxes. Click yes to say that you want to schedule the scan when you restart your computer, and then reboot. This will perform a scan when you restart your computer which attempts to fix many of the problems. However if the hard drive is physically failing then you will need to replace it. You can also use disk defragmenter to speed up your computer.
Memory
Sometimes your computer being unreliable could be as a result of your computers RAM failing. It's possible to test this memory by running the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool from Microsoft. If you do notice memory problems then simply taking the memory out and putting it back in can sometimes fix it.
Update windows
Run windows update on a regular basis to make sure that all windows files and drivers are updated on a regular basis.
These steps can be used to remove and eliminate the most common causes of computer freezes. There are however plenty of other solutions depending on the exact cause of your problem.
