The Monagrey Trojan is a particularly nasty computer file that causes windows to freeze many key processes, it also affects internet explorer and prevents windows running a number of popular applications.
This Trojan hijacks your browser and changes the home page to point to the wikipedia article on Human Rights, as it is claimed to be created to highlight the human rights violations which are affecting the modern world. However it is more likely to be considered as Extorsion ware. Monagrey will prevent you running the following applications:
- Messenger
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Outlook
- Winamp
- Microsoft Visual Studio
- Irfanview
- Google Talk
- Macromedia Dreamweaver
- Adobe Acrobat
- Registry Editor
- Date and Time
- Task Manager
Upon becoming infected with the virus the computer used doesn't know anything about the infection until they restart their computer, when they will be confronted by a fairly polite message introducing the virus as MonaRonaDona. This is clearly a ploy to try and get the user to search for more information on MonaRonaDona using the Internet, where if they do they will see lots of YouTube videos and forum posts which suggest paying $40 to purchase UniGray, a fake antivirus solution. This software will only actually remove this one virus. Now all of the major antivirus applications include support for the MonaGrey Trojan and so can remove it easily.
You will know if you are infected with the virus upon reading the introductory message, and also when programs terminate without reason, and when your homepage is altered.
This Trojan cannot self replicate, it must be transmitted manually, it's normally installed by tricking a user into thinking that they are installing something useful that they want. It's also possible to install Trojans if you do not have a secure computer or do not install the windows update patches on a regular basis. This Trojan is typically transmitted through chat, P2P file sharing networks, newsgroups and email among other methods.
How to remove Monagrey
You should start by updating your antivirus definitions and making sure that they are all up to date, most pieces of anti virus software can now support MonaGrey and remove it quickly. Virus removal can be difficult, but it really doesn't have to be!
I personally suggest using Micro Antivirus as it provides the necessary information to remove MonaGrey from your computer so that you can wave goodbye to her for good! Of course in future you should be much more cautious when deciding who to run files from. Only run files from people that you know and trust, this will limit the risk of you becoming infected again in the future.
Monagrey is a Trojan, and so by definition it is not capable of self replicating itself, this at least limits the chance of infection, even if it is still all too easy. If you're looking for an easy way to remove monagrey virus then you should first try upgrading your antivirus software to make sure that it is included in the virus definitions.
